Head of the anti-religious literary journal MASSOLIT.  Sentenced to death by Woland.
  •  Professor Woland
A "foreign professor" who is "in Moscow to present a performance of 'black magic' and then expose its machinations".  Satan in disguise.
  •  Ivan Nikolaevich Ponyrev (Homeless)
A young, aspiring poet employed by Berlioz.  He witnesses Berlioz's death but the authorities do not listen and send him to an asylum.
  •  Pontius Pilate
The Roman Procurator of Judea, a procurator in this case is a governor of a small province.
  •  Yeshua Ha-Nozri
Wanderer, "mad philosopher, as Pilate calls him, whose name means Jesus.
  •  Behemoth
An enormous black cat, capable of standing on two legs and talking. Part of Woland's retinue.
  •  Koroviev (Fagott)
A purported "ex-choirmaster".  Woland's assistant, capable of creating any illusions. Part of Woland's retinue.
  •  Azazello
A short man with a bowler hat and a fang jutting out of his mouth, and fiery read hair and a nasal voice.  Part of Woland's retinue.
  •  Hella
Beautiful and redheaded maid to Woland and his retinue. Remarked as being "perfect, were it not for a purple scar on her neck" – the scar suggesting that she is also a vampiress.  Part of Woland's retinue.
  •  The Master
An author who had written a novel about the meeting of Pontius Pilate and Yeshua Ha-Nozri. Meets Ivan Nikolaevich in the asylum.
  •  Margarita
The Master's lover who is trapped in a loveless marriage.  Depressed and suicidal until she meets Woland and friends.
